Metronome Information for Piano Students
A metronome is a device that clicks a set number of steady beats per minute. Your teacher will have one available to use during lessons, but you should have one for your own practice at home.
Rhythm is the most basic part of music. A metronome helps us along the path to developing this underlying pulse with all its complexities. There are many ways that a metronome is used as a practice tool throughout all levels of piano study, and it’s never too early to start.
Here are the different types of metronomes along with some things to consider. With any metronome, consider the sound it makes and whether you want volume control and the option for earphones.
Analog
This traditional type of metronome winds up and has a swinging pendulum. No batteries or electricity required! A slider moves up and down to select the tempo. They are usually pyramid shaped and the nicer wooden options make for a decorative addition to your piano. Small, portable versions are also an option. The movement of the pendulum back and forth could be a distraction for some.
Electronic
These metronomes have a dial that turns to point to the desired beats per minute. A good quality brand will cost more, but last a lifetime. There are many cheap versions to choose from for a starter metronome.
Digital
Digital metronomes have lots of settings, such as various time signatures that put stress on certain beats.
